Colour and Texture: Drawing and Painting Large Scale abstracting from Nature

Spend one day drawing in charcoal, graphite and chalks, and one day painting with gouache, acrylics and mixed media, making large scale layered, textured, abstract compositions.

The Sussex Prairie is a garden full of colour and texture, through which you are invited to walk, for a full sensory immersive experience. On this 2 day workshop you will be given a specific approach to drawing that uses structure and repetition to build up marks on a large piece of paper, in response to the all-over sensation of being deeply immersed in the flowerbeds. Using the same rhythmical, repetitive process with paint  on day 2, will allow you to ease into abstract painting by building up layers of tactile colour, evocative of the sounds and smells of the garden, rather than the simply the ‘view’. Each day you will be guided with meditation to tune into your senses, and given warm up exercises to draw and gather materials directly from the garden. The larger scale drawings and paintings can be made inside the studio or out in the garden, depending on the weather and your preference.

Artists for inspiration include: Monet, Joan Mitchell, Patrick Heron, Bonnard, Adrien Berg, Cy Twombly

Time: 9am - 2pm each day (with access to the garden until 5pm each day)
