In these 3 hour workshops there is more time for drawing - while still having meditation as its core. These extended sessions give you the opportunity to really focus on the subject in hand for a sustained period, with more time for the drawings to grow. With each session guided by the usual meditations, the space is truly held for you by me. These workshops are intended to offer you a retreat style experience at home, where you are invited to switch off all distractions and put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on your door. This is valuable time for you and your creative self.
The following are all 3 hour recordings of previous live* retreat style workshops, available as downloadable link to watch in your own time. Cost £40
*New LIVE sessions will be added to the website and advertise via Katie’s newsletter throughout the year. Please note, these are often offered at short notice, as they fit around Katie’s other work, and are usually inspired by her current activities and practice. So watch this space!
Large Scale Gestural Drawing - We will work with drawing and meditation to explore how the body and breath can create a rhythmical momentum as a way of starting a drawing, rather than thinking, or planning. You can work as large as you like, as large as you can, so that the whole body can get involved. Without the need for any specific subject, we can let the gestural mark be layered and repeated, using inks and coloured pastels. By focusing on the movement and weight of the mark, exciting and surprising drawings will emerge out of the process. You will be given guided exercises to initiate the drawing and prompts to help sustain it, change it, and help it grow.
Autumn Colour - making the most of the tail end of Autumn to play with colour - mark making and meditation, layering, scattering, like autumn leaves, settle into the process and feel refreshed by this gentle dive into process and materials, guided with meditation and breath work. This session will include some time away from the camera so you can go out for a walk.
Drawing by Candlelight - Come gather online for a winter special, a drawing and meditation retreat, Drawing by Candlelight, each of us in the quiet space of our own home or studio, united by the ancient light of the flame, and the modern light of our screen. Drawing in the dark can be a very exciting, liberating experience, allowing you to be totally immersed in the process. Our experience of seeing is what we draw from, and changing the conditions can subtly, or radically, shift our perspective. Like meditation, drawing can make us more aware of our surroundings, can make us sensitive to the present moment. In this workshop we will be sharing the meditative quality, as well as the excitement, of drawing objects lit by flickering candles, shapes shifting, shadows forming and moving. We will start in the daylight, with guided meditation and practical drawing exercises, getting to know the subject, processes and materials. As the light fades into dusk and eventually night, we carry on drawing, enjoying the experience of letting go.
Drawing and Dancing - Using meditation and some informal freeform dance exercises and music to connect with the body, and the senses, you will be encouraged to move the body and make marks without being restricted by expectations and outcomes.
Working as large as your space allows, choosing your preferred flowing materials (eg charcoal, pastels, inks) you will learn to overcome the paralysis of ‘overthinking’ by practicing spontaneous movement, and letting this flow into your marks. to experience the freedom of boundless creative movement.
Think of this as an experience, rather than a technique or process to learn. Treat yourself to this one-off, 3 hour, moment of joy and movement. You do not have to be a dancer! This workshop is suitable for all, for anyone with an open heart and mind, physically able and willing to let go and get messy. Beginners welcome. An ideal gift to do with a friend or loved one.
Drawing Meditation and Memory - All drawing is to some extent influenced by memory - a visual reinvention of what we have seen and drawn before, filtered through our personal experiences of the world
Blossomest Blossom - Using charcoal, coloured chalks, inks, oil pastels and watercolour, we will make quick studies exploring the beautiful, fragile and transient nature of blossom, from the humble blackthorn in the hedgerows to the magnificent magnolia tree.
Get Grounded - combining Qigong movement meditation flow into the practice - tuning into the energy of Spring, keeping our feet on the ground while the sap rises! Where possible, we can use the outdoors for inspiration, stepping out barefoot for part of the session if appropriate. Getting out hands dirty, using earth pigments, charcoal, and any found natural materials.
Human Animal: Movement, Marks and Meditation Inspired by my recent workshop with Helen Poynor (Walk of Life, Dorset), and integrating it with my qigong training, this will be a workshop working at your own scale, on a series of drawings in response to the movement of the body, using the body’s innate structure and sensibility to release, relax, and support itself, finding rest, so that the mind can be free, and the movement can initiate the drawing. Listening to the creative spark, sensing into our animal aliveness.
Purchase: via Katie directly - email for payment details, referencing which workshop you wish to purchase, and you will be sent a link to the workshops
