DRAWING FOR ALL
Part 2 - Live Course
Drawing as an act of being present
Part 1: 2 hours 24 min
TONE
The main subject of this session is tone: how light and dark create the illusion of three-dimensional form on a flat surface. We work with a simple egg or piece of fruit as our subject — chosen not because it is easy, but because its form is so universal, so known to the hand and the eye, that it asks something particular of us.
Part 2: 2 hours 55 min
PERSPECTIVE
Perspective has a reputation for being dry and technical. This session reframes it entirely. Perspective is simply the way our brain makes sense of the world: the way it tells us what is near and what is far, what is above us and what is below. We have been reading perspective since we were babies. The challenge is not to learn it, but to see it, and to stop the brain from overriding what the eye actually observes.
Part 3: 2 hours 47 min
ORGANIG FORM
Organic form — the forms of nature, of growth, of living things — does not follow the fixed rules of a box or a building. It grows from within, cell by cell, in relationship to itself. Drawing it asks for a different quality of attention: less analytical, more sensory. More present to the surface of things. To draw organically is to approach the subject with openness, letting the drawing find its own edges, rather than deciding in advance what the form should look like.
Part 4: 2 hours 32 min
FIGURE AND LANDSCAPE
The final session brings together everything from the previous three and applies it to the two subjects that most people find daunting: the human figure and the landscape. The session's central proposition is that these two subjects are more closely related than they might appear — that the rolling hills of a landscape and the curves of a body are drawn in the same way, with the same understanding of form, light and surface.
